Hardwood deck under a charcoal-framed insulated-roof pergola attached to a brick home, by BRT Building Canberra
Decks & outdoor works

Decks and outdoor areas built properly from the frame up

BRT Building builds new decks, deck repairs, pergola pairings, ramps, steps and outdoor upgrades across Canberra, handled directly by Ben and Ryan.

What we cover

Outdoor work we can quote

From full new decks to practical repairs, BRT handles the outdoor work that makes the space usable again, with the quote and build kept direct.

New decks

Composite and hardwood decks for entertaining areas, pool surrounds, back entries and outdoor living spaces.

Deck repairs and resurfacing

If the frame is sound, BRT can replace failed boards, tidy damaged sections and bring an older deck back into use.

Deck + pergola builds

Deck framing, posts and roof layout planned together, so the finished area feels intentional instead of bolted together later.

Steps, ramps and access

Practical transitions between house, deck and garden, including ramps and safer access points where needed.

Balustrades and privacy

Cable, timber, glass and privacy screen options depending on the layout, budget and how open the deck needs to feel.

Why the structure matters

The part you do not see is the part that decides how long the deck lasts

A deck can look clean on day one and still fail early if the structure, fixings, drainage or board choice are wrong for the space. Ben and Ryan look at the whole outdoor area before quoting, not just the square metres of boards.

  • Frame spacing and substructure
  • Drainage and airflow under the deck
  • Fixings, end cuts and board movement
  • Post placement when a pergola is involved
  • Safe steps, ramps and level changes
  • Materials that suit Canberra weather
Material choices

Choosing the right deck finish

BRT can talk through composite, hardwood, balustrade and privacy options during the site visit. The right choice depends on the look you want, how much maintenance you want to do, and how exposed the deck is.

Composite decking

A lower-maintenance option for entertaining areas, pool surrounds and shaded outdoor spaces. Good when the client wants a clean finish without regular oiling.

Hardwood decking

A real timber finish with more natural variation underfoot. Best for clients who like the look and feel of timber and are comfortable with the maintenance that comes with it.

Balustrades and screens

Cable, timber, glass and privacy screens can all suit different layouts. BRT will recommend these based on the view, height, boundary position and budget.

Ben or Ryan can bring material samples or talk through finish options during the quote, so you are not choosing from a screen alone.

Plan it together

Planning the deck and cover together

If the deck is going under a pergola, the two should be planned as one outdoor area. That means thinking about shade, posts, drainage, access and how the finished structure lines up with the house.

  • Better post placement
  • Cleaner roof and deck alignment
  • Less rework later
  • A more complete outdoor living area

Repair or replace

Not every old deck needs to be rebuilt

If the frame is still sound, BRT may be able to re-board or repair the deck instead of replacing everything. If the structure is failing, Ben or Ryan will show you why before quoting a full rebuild.

When repair may make sense

  • Surface boards are worn or damaged
  • A small section has failed
  • The frame is still solid
  • The layout still works

When replacement may be smarter

  • Rot has reached the substructure
  • Posts or framing have moved
  • Drainage problems keep returning
  • The deck no longer suits how the space is used
Our process

How the quote and build works

1

Site visit and measure

Ben or Ryan comes out, walks the space, checks access, measures the area and looks at anything that could affect the build.

2

Talk through options

You discuss board type, balustrade, steps, ramps, pergola cover and any practical details that matter for the space.

3

Written, itemised quote

You get the scope, inclusions, exclusions and material allowances in writing before work starts.

4

Build with updates

BRT keeps the job direct, with progress updates and the site kept tidy as the work moves along.

5

Handover

Ben or Ryan walks the finished deck with you, checks final details and closes out the job properly.

FAQ

Questions before quoting a deck

Do you build both decks and pergolas?

Yes. BRT can quote a deck by itself or plan the deck and pergola together so the posts, roofline, access and finished layout all make sense.

Can you repair an existing deck instead of replacing it?

Sometimes. If the frame is sound, repair or re-boarding may be enough. If the substructure is failing, Ben or Ryan will explain what they found before quoting a bigger replacement.

Composite or hardwood, which is better?

It depends on the look, maintenance and exposure. Composite is generally lower-maintenance. Hardwood gives a real timber finish but needs more upkeep over time.

Do you build steps, ramps and access points?

Yes. BRT can include steps, ramps and practical transitions between the house, deck and garden as part of the quote.

What balustrade options do you offer?

BRT can talk through cable, timber, glass and privacy screen options depending on the deck height, view, boundary position and budget.

How long does a deck quote take?

After the site visit, BRT puts together a written quote once the scope and material choices are clear.
